What is a Séance?

A séance is an attempt to communicate with the dead. The séance, or sitting, is led by a person known as a medium who will go into a trance that allows the dead to communicate through him or her.

How does a Séance Work?

A typical séance is held in a darkened room, with a cloth-covered table, candles, perhaps even a crystal ball to serve as a focus for the session. There is also an experienced medium present - a person who has spoken with spirits or who allows them to use his or her body to communicate with those present. In many cases, the medium or group of people may even use Ouija boards or other devices to communicate with the spirits on the other side.

How long have Séances been around?

In the mid-19th century, sisters Kate and Margaret Fox of Hydesville, New York ushered in
the era of the séance. They claimed to be able to communicate with spirits using a system of
taps; they would ask yes or no questions, and the spirits would answer by tapping once for yes
and twice for no. The sisters became renowned mediums and inspired innumerable imitators.

How long does it last?
